Even The Idol, Sam Levinson’s preposterously controversial vehicle for Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, is a Brian De Palma/ Paul Verhoeven riff (the latter’s 1992 classic Basic Instinct is repeatedly shown playing on a TV in the pilot), though the preemptive, and still ongoing, outrage about the Max series has largely occluded what it owes to the likes of the former’s Body Double (1984).
